APPLICATION OF OPTICAL CONTROL TECHNIQUES TO VTOL LANDING TRAJECTORIES.
Abstract
Optimal control techniques are applied to a VTOL (Vertical Take-off and Landing) aircraft to find the minimum fuel landing trajectory. The technique is applied to the XC-142A using a nonlinear fourth order plant with two controls, thrust and wing incidence. Both the straight and conjugate gradient methods are employed. Penalty terms in the cost function are used to match the terminal states. The key to convergence is proper initial choice and subsequent changes of the weighting multiplier of the penaly terms. It is indicated that the practical solution is suboptimal. (Author)
