DEVELOPMENT OF A MODULAR 100-WATT FLAME HEATED THERMIONIC DIODE.

Abstract

The report summarizes the work to design, fabricate and test 100-watt flame heated thermionic diodes and to evaluate the test results on a performance index (P.I.). Criteria to evaluate the thermionic diode module performance is a weighted compilation of the following parameter values (goal for P.I. = 1) operating life (500 hours), output power (104 watts), output voltage (0.5 volts), efficiency (8%), emitter temperature (1375C), weight (0.97 pound). The performance index obtained and the method of compilation are presented. The design and calibration of the diode calorimeter, evaluation of emitter temperature distribution and general heat pipe design are discussed in detail. (Author)
