SPECTROSCOPIC STUDIES ON S-TETRAZINE.

Abstract

From earlier studies it was shown that neither a vibronic analysis nor a normal coordinate vibrational analysis of s-tetrazine could be done until two low lying, fundamental, vibrational modes (Au and B1u) were found. This work reports on the discovery of these two modes, the assignments of various infrared absorption peaks based on them, and the problems surrounding their observation. They are located at 337/cm and 252/cm respectively. Since s-tetrazine had previously been reported to be metastable at room temperature, it was desirable to study its decomposition. Both thermal and photochemical decomposition work is reported and discussed. The extinction coefficients in various portions of the visible and ultraviolet regions have been determined, and observations concerning a possible second n to pi* electronic transition are reported.
