AIRBORNE TARGET RECOGNITION STUDY.
Abstract
A primary goal of the current program is an evaluation of radiometric target detection capability in comparison to that of an active radar system. To permit such evaluation, the present report examines the statistics of fluctuations in the apparent background temperature using two complementary approaches. Through use of a specular reflection model for homogenous terrain, a physical approach yields temperature probability distributions that are derived as functions of (1) variations in the index of refraction, and (2) the local tilt angle of the terrain. A mathematical modelling method results in calculable distributions when inhomogenous terrain is represented by a two dimensional random telegrapher's signal. Also covered are the characteristics of certain special configurations and processing techniques. Basically beam sharpening operations, the use of these configurations is motivated by the need to provide improved target-background discriminations in a (necessarily) low resolution radiometer system.
