RADIOMETRIC METHODS FOR MEASURING CLEARANCES INSIDE HOT-AIR TURBINES (RADIOMETRICKE METODY NA MERENI VULI UVNITR TEPELNYCH TURBIN),

Abstract

Measurements of clearances between rotating and stationary parts of gas or steam turbines are rather difficult, especially if the changes taking place in operating machines are to be continuously recorded. Conventional mechanical, optical and electrical methods fail to provide accurate results and very often cannot be used. New methods recently developed are based on using radioactive isotopes. Some instruments measure the absorption or reflection of pencils of rays, and the other measures the position of the radiating source attached to the turbine rotor. The article deals with both groups, evaluates their specific features and compares their convenience in practical applications. (Author)
