RESPONSE OF STRUCTURES TO BLAST: A NEW CRITERION

Abstract

Distributed energy explosions and lumped energy explosions are examined in terms of two damage criteria currently in use: (1) the peak overpressure and (2) the positive impulse per unit area. From these two diverse and partially contradicting items, the concept is developed that a suitable index for the damage potential of explosive blast is the impulse per unit area that it can deliver within some critical time.
