AN IMPROVED DISCRETE-ELEMENT ANALYSIS AND PROGRAM FOR THE LINEAR-ELASTIC STATIC ANALYSIS OF MERIDIONALLY-CURVED, VARIABLE-THICKNESS, BRANCHED THIN SHELLS OF REVOLUTION SUBJECTED TO GENERAL EXTERNAL MECHANICAL AND THERMAL LOADS. PART I: ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION.

Abstract

An improved discrete-element analysis and computer program utilizing meridionally-curved and/or conical elements of revolution are presented for the linear-elastic, static load-deflection analysis of meridionally-curved, variable-thickness, single-layer, branched, thin shells of revolution subjected to concentrated or distributed external loading as well as thermal loading. Numerous problems which exercise various options of the program and the analysis have been solved, and comparisons have been made with available independent solutions. Part 1 of this report describes the analysis and evaluations, while Part 2 contains descriptions of the SABOR 4 programs and presents example numerical results for two illustrative problems.
