CLINICAL PHYSIOLOGY IN SWEDEN: PART IV. STOCKHOLM.

Abstract

The report presents selected aspects of the staff organization, mission, and research programs of the Department of Clinical Physiology, Karolinska Institutet (medical college) in Stockholm and of its affiliated laboratories in the Military Medical Examining Center and of other affiliated University Hospitals in Stockholm. The research and graduate medical education program of the King Gustav Vth Research Institute affiliated with the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm is also described. A survey of research activities of these departments is presented and includes the areas of (1) Work Physiology, assessment of physical capabilities of young men for military service, athletes, normal elderly persons and those with functional and organic diseases; (2) the hemodynamic response to beta-adrenergic blockade in normal men and in coronary artery disease, at rest, and during exercise; (3) the regulation of peripheral circulation in health and disease; and (4) clinical research on the pathophysiology and therapy of extensive burn trauma.
