DEVELOPMENT OF THREE IMPROVED PRIMARY FLIGHT CONTROLLER DESIGNS.

Abstract

Two operative prototype controllers were developed for in-flight simulator evaluation of three prototype flight controller designs. Flight test requirements for the controllers required right-hand seat or co-pilot installation. A survey is undertaken both of the literature and sidearm controller practice. Salient features of these controllers are summarized. Development and fabrication for test of three designs is described namely: (1) A Circumferential Controller, (2) A Vernier Grip, and (3) A Dual Sidearm Controller. Mode switching that would require frequent or rapid access by the co-pilot is made integral to the controller grips. The operating functions of a flight modes panel for the next generation of large jet aircraft is described. (Author)
