HIGH-TEMPERATURE-RESISTANT POLYMER RESEARCH.

Abstract

The preparation of 180 g of beryllium 4-biphenyl(phenyl)-phosphinate for evaluation purposes has been carried out. Beryllium a-naphthyl(phenyl)phosphinate has been prepared and evaluated for thermal stability. An attempt was made to prepare beryllium diphenylphosphinate-methyl(phenyl)phosphinate copolymer in trifluoroacetic acid, and an attempt was also made to prepare a cross-linked polymer from beryllium methyl(phenyl)phosphinate copolymer in trifluoroacetic acid, and an attempt was also made to prepare a cross-linked polymer from beryllium methyl(phenyl)phosphinate into which was incorporated a small quantity of phenylphosphonic acid. A preliminary study of the reactions of basic beryllium acetate with phosphinic acids was undertaken to see if tractable polymer formed. Molecular weight studies of several beryllium phosphinate polymers in toluene have shown that water causes rapid degradation from approximately 200 to 60 polymer units. (Author-PL).
