COMPACT VHF AIRCRAFT ANTENNA.

Abstract

The report describes a VHF/FM compact airborne blade antenna operating over the 24 - 76 MHz frequency range in a configuration 8 inches tall with radiation efficiencies in excess of 20 percent. The antenna is a helical monopole configuration in a subsonic aerodynamic blade package. The antenna can be autotuned over the 24 - 76 MHz frequency band with VSWR's less than 1.5:1.0 and efficiencies in excess of 20 percent and ranging up to 80 percent. It is capable of accepting r-f powers up to 100 Watts average. Weight of the blade antenna is 5 1/2 pounds; a separate control module weighs 3 1/2 pounds. In addition to description and performance data, the report includes results of scale model studies of this antenna on both rotary and fixed wing aircraft, and its characteristics in a retransmission communication system.
