DEVELOPMENT OF A LIGHTWEIGHT TROPOSCATTER POWER AMPLIFIER.

Abstract

The primary objective of the program was to design and develop a lightweight troposcatter transmitter system including antenna. The transmitter was to make use of a newly developed Electrostatically Focused Klystron Tube. State-of-the-art technology common in the aerospace industry was to be utilized to reduce size and weight of the equipment. The result of the program was the development of a transmitter system weighing approximately 100 pounds. The RF power output was 1 KW CW over the 4.4-5.0 GHz troposcatter band. The weight includes a 6 foot diameter parabolic dish of novel design. This report describes the development program and outlines the technical tradeoffs that were necessary during the design phase. Recommendations are made for future systems. (Author)
