THE USE OF MOMENTS IN ESTIMATING THE SPECTRUM.

Abstract

Error bounds for the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a self-adjoint operator A are obtained in terms of (Az,z) and (Az,Az), the first two moments of a probability distribution generated by the trial element z. Lower bounds for certain quantum-mechanical expectation values are also calculated. Recent European contributions are featured. (Author)
