A STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF PHASE INTERFERENCE FADING,
Abstract
The problem of phase interference fading over line-of-sight propagation paths is examined from a theoretical point of view. This type of fading is caused by complex interactions between various simultaneously occurring modes of propagation. Starting from a set of basic assumptions concerning the various component fields which combine to form the resultant field at the receiving end of the path, a derivation is given of the probability distribution of the amplitude of the resultant field, considered as a random variable. This distribution, known as the Nakagami-Rice distribution, contains the Rayleigh distribution as a special case. A table and several sets of curves showing the results of numerical computations of probability levels based on the Nakagami-Rice distribution are presented. Alternative theoretical representations of the results are also given. The results of experimental measurements are compared with the theoretical curves. Excellent agreement is found over the entire range of probability levels, except at the extreme ends near zero and unity. In spite of the striking confirmation of the validity of the Nakagami-Rice statistics, there is at present no satisfactory way of determining in advance the value of a parameter of this distribution, relating to the relative powers contained in the desired signal and the interfering signals.
