STATE SPACE APPLICATION TO SYSTEM DESIGN.
Abstract
The availability of digital and hybrid computers has led to the development of the state space approach and optimization theory for the analysis and design of control systems, particularly in space oriented problems where meaningful cost criteria can be defined. In this thesis optimization theory is investigated as applied to classical control systems, such as regulators, to determine if these techniques may be used in the design of systems to meet conventional performance standards. As part of this investigation a method has been developed which yields the overall state equations for a system from the state equations of the individual components. Also, since optimal designs are usually non-linear and time varying, a discussion of stability criteria for these systems is included. (Author)
