SCR CONTROL OF EL MATRICES.

Abstract

If solid state display structures can be sufficiently developed, large bistable electroluminescent displays can be used in a wider variety of operational environments; maintenance costs will be lower; and speed, accuracy, and reliability will be better than in the present projection displays. One way of developing such a display structure would be to use beam-leaded semiconductor control elements; beam-leading techniques will improve electrical performance, simplify handling and assembly, and reduce cost-per-element of the bistable EL panel. In an earlier study of the electrical circuit, a 350-volt SCR for driving an EL lamp and a low-voltage SCR circuitry that gives the EL driver memory were found to be superior to all other configurations. A beam-leaded lateral SCR was developed to drive the EL lamp. Beam-leaded techniques were also applied to the development of a beam-leaded memory circuit. A 100 element breadboard model was fabricated in which beam-leaded devices were mounted on ceramic wafers. Deposited thick film conductors provide common signal and power connections. Because of the improved drive circuit performance resulting from the beam-leading effort, all glass plastic dielectric EL lamps with hermetically sealed construction can be used providing higher brightness than was possible previously. Based on the study described in this report, it is suggested that a beam-leaded single chip device should be designed. (Author)
