PRODUCTION TOOL FOR DIFFUSION BONDING. VOLUME II.

Abstract

Two machines were developed to apply the hot electrode process. One is called a Yield Strength Controlled Diffusion Bonding (YSDB) machine. This machine uses hot refractory metal anvils and has been developed from a standard 100 kva spot welder. The bond cycle is typically 10 seconds and requires an argon protective atmosphere. An important feature of the machine is that feedback circuits control pressure and temperature throughout the cycle. This feature is believed to be extremely important in generating reproducible joints. Structures such as TD Nickel combustion cans, columbium alloy rib-reinforced panels, and tantalum alloy box beam columns and nosecaps have been fabricated and tested. The second bonder is called a Continuous Seam Diffusion Bonding (CSDB) machine. This bonder uses hot, refractory metal wheels and has been built from a standard 150 kva seam welder. Bonding speeds are typically 12 inches/minute. Assuming an arc of contact between the wheels and workpiece of 0.2 inch, this speed corresponds to a bond cycle of one second. This is fast enough to allow bonding to be performed in air. Feedback circuits provide controlled pressure and temperature. Such circuits provide the machine with the versatility to bond structures tapering from 0.75 to 0.25 inch in a distance of four inches, or to make more than 30 bonds simultaneously. A wide range of joint geometries have been bonded in TD Nickel-chromium, titanium alloys, and other materials. (Author)
