OBSERVATIONS OF GULF STREAM MEANDERS MARCH-APRIL 1967.
Abstract
Between 27 March and 4 April 1967 a cruise was conducted in the north-western Atlantic Ocean by the USS WILLIAM C. LAWE (DD-763) and R/V DELAWARE (Bureau of Commercial Fisheries). The northern edge of the Gulf Stream (North Wall) was investigated between 67 deg and 71 deg W with 125 expendable bathythermographs (SXBT's). Three small meanders in the North Wall were observed. Meanders in the intermediate stage (between uniform flow and cutoff eddies) apparently are accompanied by cold water undercutting the warm surface water. Sound channels tend to form in the troughs of meanders, and deep layer depths form in the peaks. The slope of the North Wall was found to vary between >45 deg near the peaks of the meanders and 0 deg 30 min in the troughs. (Author)
