TEST SPECIFICATIONS MANUAL: COMPOSITE MATERIALS FOR TURBINE COMPRESSORS.

Abstract

The manual describes a program conducted to define a meaningful series of tests to evaluate composite materials for turbine engine compressor application. A number of metal matrix composites and homogeneous baseline materials were subjected to these tests to determine which materials offered most promise for the advanced gas turbine compressor. Specifically, the manual covers the following areas: definition of valid screening and evaluation tests for composite materials that will operate in a wide range of high-performance compressors, a method for the selection of composite systems which show potential for use as compressor components, and a definition of the minimum number and type of tests that are judged as necessary to qualify for application to high performance gas turbine compressors. Sufficient detail is provided on the equipment, calibration techniques, specimen configurations, and the test conditions to permit duplication of the above evaluation tests by an independent investigator.
