AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF MODEL SILO-TYPE STRUCTURES IN COHESIVE SOILS. PHASE II. MODEL TESTS.
Abstract
Tests were performed on aluminum cylinders 4 inches in diameter and 2 feet long buried vertically with their top at the soil surface in 20-30 Ottawa sand and in Goose Lake clay with a water content of approximately 18 percent. Static and dynamic pressures were applied to the soil surface. In all tests the test cylinder was floating in soil contained in a cylindrical vessel 2 feet in diameter and 5.12 feet deep. For static loadings in sand there was a definite tendency for the ratio of horizontal to vertical pressure on the test cylinder, K sub s, to become smaller with depth and to remain fairly constant with pressure. These tests show that the change from downward shear to upward shear occurs near the lower one-third point of the test cylinder. Static tests in clay gave a wide range in K sub s from approximately 0.25 to 1.0 though arguments are presented which indicate that it should be near 1.0 for all the tests. Shear reversal appears to have occurred near midheight of the test cylinder in the dynamic clay tests also. (Author)
