TROPIC SERVICE TEST OF SHERIDAN M551, ASSIST WINCH KIT.

Abstract

Testing of the Sheridan M551 Assist Winch Kit was conducted by the Mobility and Weapons Systems Branch, Test Division, USA Tropic Test Center from 6 March to 10 April 1968 in the vicinity of Fort Sherman, Canal Zone. Results are based on operations under a variety of conditions including highways, secondary roads and jungle cross-country operations, swimming, and main gun firing. A total of 145 miles was accumulated on the M551 with the winch kit installed including 15 miles on jungle trails, 15 miles in virgin jungle and 115 miles on highways and secondary roads. The total swimming time with winch kit mounted was 40 minutes. Recovery work with an M113 and self-recovery of the M551 were included in the test. The main gun was fired over the front, side and rear of the M551 with the winch mounted in the rear position. The initial winch used in the conduct of the test was damaged during main gun firing. A replacement winch was then provided but testing of this winch was limited by the necessity to conduct higher priority M551 tests during the winch kit test time frame. (Author)
