COMPUTATIONS OF VLF FIELDS FOR DETERMINATION OF ELECTRON DENSITY PROFILES USING OBLIQUE SOUNDER DATA,

Abstract

Electric field strength levels have been recorded by a VLF multiple-frequency oblique-incidence ionospheric sounder over a low latitude path from Hawaii to Southern California. These field strength values are compared with predicted fields obtained from a mathematical propagation mode, in order to investigate the propagation characteristics of various electron density profiles representative of the D-region of the ionosphere. A procedure for determining a 'best-fit' profile to the sounder data is demonstrated and the uniqueness of this profile is discussed. (Author)
