LOW FREQUENCY CROSSED-FIELD AMPLIFIER.
Abstract
The report describes the final phase of the design, construction, and evaluation of a dc operated, reentrant electron stream, forward wave, cold cathode, UHF crossed-field amplifier. A unique feature of the basic tube design is the inverted cathode-anode geometry which accommodates the forced air cooling requirement and also provides for minimum size and weight. The work of this program, termed Phase II, is a continuation of that begun earlier, but not completed due to the lack of a suitable drive power source. Background material in the form of a review of Phase I is presented and serves as an introduction to the present phase. The Phase II tube design evolved from an analysis of results of Phase I coupled with intensive slow wave circuit and impedance matching cold test studies. The design, construction and operating results of the Phase II tube, showing operation over the 406 Mc to 450 Mc frequency band are presented in detail and indicate the capability of attaining the full specification. In fact, the specified peak and average power (250 kw, 7.5 kw) and 10 db minimum gain would have been demonstrated over the 10% bandwidth had not a coaxial circulator failed, preventing further testing. Just prior to this point, the tube was operating at 253 kw peak power, 5.07 kw average power and 53% efficiency. Throughout testing, spectrum analyzer displays showed extremely low levels of spurious output. (Author)
