SYNTHESIS AND EVALUATION OF NEW AND IMPROVED GYRO FLOTATION FLUIDS.

Abstract

The purpose of this research program is to produce liquids which have densities between 2.5 and 3.0 g./cc. for use as gyro flotation fluids. Heavy metal fluoroalkoxides, fluoro-diketonates and alkanethiolates were synthesized and characterized. Thermal stability and compatibility studies were made on a proprietary fluid. The synthesis of heavy metal alkanethiolates was investigated and two compounds were isolated and characterized. Both are viscous, high boiling liquids. Methods of preparing fluoroalkanethiols were explored as a means of providing starting materials for the synthesis of heavy metal fluoroalkanethiolates. (Author)
