METEOROLOGICAL RADAR IN THE SERVICE OF AVIATION (RADAR METEOROLOGICZNY NA USLUGACH LOTNICTWA),
Abstract
The adaptation of radar to the needs of Meteorology has paved the way to all around investigations of the processes taking place in the atmosphere. Radar enabled pictures of a variety of meteorological phenomena, in the form similar to that of x-ray pictures. Radar enables us to 'see' at great distances the disintegration of rainfall or snowfall particles in a cloud; to observe their growth to determine the level at which snowflakes melt; to locate with precision rainfall and storm zones over vast areas. Poland's first meteorological radar was set up a few years ago at Legionowo near Warsaw, in the Aerology Department of the State Hydro-Meteorological Institute (PIHM). The photographs on two pages represent the original results obtained in Polish climatic conditions. (Author)
