ADVANCED PENETRATION PROBLEMS WAKE STRUCTURE MEASUREMENTS

Abstract

Progress on the subject contract is described in this report. Work has been performed on the turbulent structure of a two-dimensional supersonic wake at angle of attack, on a similar wake at zero incidence but with heat transfer, and a turbulent plasma jet. Data from a zero-incidence, adiabatic wake are being further reduced. Notable findings in these experiments include highly accurate values of the turbulent Reynolds and Prandtl number, a re-appearance of the so-called front wavelength of free turbulence, and the explanation of very large electron density fluctuations as due to transitional mixing.
