MA-3 IGNITER FUEL VALVE PURGE CHECK,

Abstract

During tanking and pre-countdown procedure at the 1-4 Test Stand, a booster main fuel valve opened, flooding the chamber with fuel and necessitating an abort of the count down. Among the events leading up to this, the igniter purge lines were pressurized to clear moisture out of the hypergol case preparatory to inserting the hypergol cartridge. The fuel valve opened when the purge pressure reached approximately 200 psig. The objective of the test is to duplicate the conditions that could have existed at 1-4 Stand and observe the results and to evaluate the safety capabilities of the relief action of the igniter valves.
