Intermediate Products of the Radiolysis of Water.

Abstract

The authors study the reaction kinetics of radiolysis of aqueous solutions as related to ion concentration, pH number and dose rate. The results show that four radiolyzed water molecules per ev of absorbed energy are drawn into reaction with the ions in the solution. It was found that the extent to which the H radicals of the hydrolyzed water molecules are drawn into reaction with an ion in the solution is related to the pH. There are apparently three types of radiolyzed water molecules which enter the reaction during irradiation of aqueous solutions: ionized molecules, excited molecules which split into radicals in the liquid phase, and excited molecules which do not split into radicals in the liquid phase. Approximately four of each of these types of molecules enter the reaction with an ion in the solution. (Author)
