Lightweight HF Antenna Development.

Abstract

The report describes the design and development of a lightweight HF antenna system intended for use with manpack field radios on communication circuits of 0 to 300 miles. In order to comply with manpack considerations, an electrically small antenna and a manually tuned coupler unit were designed so as to be compatible with a wide variety of field radios. The primary program goal was to design an antenna system which radiates upward, affecting communications by the skyward mode. The most important use of such an antenna is in environments where surface wave propagation (as supplied by whip antennas) is difficult or impossible: dense jungle, mountainous terrain, or over poor soil.
