10-Watt Liquid Ammonia Battery Design and Development.

Abstract

A program of development having as principal objectives the extension of previously established ammonia battery capabilities and the adaptation of such chemistries involved to specific requirements was conducted. The need for a significantly increased output from batteries of established volumes and configuration dictated a concentration of effort in review and modification on a basic cell level. Significant progress was made with final test data indicating discharge life capability of 6-1/2 hours at 314-milliampere drain rate (from -65F to +125F) under a discharge schedule calling for nine-minute discharge at a 50-milliampere drain and one minute at the 314-milliampere drain rate. Improvements accomplished in basic cell design which were principally responsible for demonstrated capacities involved readjustment of the cathode formulations and physical structure, together with the introduction of more durable separation membranes. Results show practical limits for ammonia battery systems at this stage of development and indicate desirability of evaluating alternative nonaqueous systems in terms of substantially greater energy capabilities.
