Parameters of use of N,N-Diethyl-M-Toluamide as Pressurized Spray to Prevent Transmission of Communicable Diseases from Arthropod Vectors.

Abstract

A study to develop a chemical method for determining quantitatively the amount of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (M-DET) that is absorbed into the skin of experimental animals when using a pressurized can and a study to ascertain what risks to health may be incurred from its application to clothing and skin was conducted at the Army Environmental Hygiene Agency, Edgewood Arsenal, Maryland. Efforts were made to devise analytical procedures capable of detecting M-DET and its suspected metabolites which could be utilized in biological sampling of exposed animals. Several methods were studied (spectrophotometric, thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography) in attempting to separate and identify the various metabolites of this compound in blood serum and urine from animals exposed to M-DET. Of those methods used no single procedure was found to be adequate for isolating and measuring all the known metabolites of M-DET, although specific metabolites could be detected by some of the methods studied. Chemical procedures for the measurement of M-DET metabolites were not adequately developed so that changes could be correlated with exposure. (Author)
