Material Response Studies (MARS I). Volume 2: High Strain-Rate Response of Three Heat-Shield Materials at Elevated Temperatures
Abstract
This report presents the results of an experimental study to determine the high strain-rate behavior of typical ablative reentry-vehicle heat shield materials at temperatures up to 600 deg F. Characterizations of quartz, silica, and carbon phenolic are presented where the effect of rate of loading, temperature, direction of loading to the fiber layup, and specimen size were investigated. In addition the material behavior after two types of impulsive loadings, a uniaxial strain preshock and a uniaxial stress preload, is presented.
