The Rated Range of Sound Signals. First Revision.

Abstract

This report presents the method for calculating the rated range of sound signals, both for pure and complex tones. The method assumes standard propagation conditions in the atmosphere and two standard listeners on board large and small vessels, respectively. The 'rated range' system shall supersede the 'average audible range' system for rating sound signals. Annex 1 compares the ratings obtained for several signals using both systems. The optimum signal frequency as a function of rated range is discussed briefly in Annex 2. The Appendix documents the graphs which are derived for this report. (Author)
