Photo-Electric Properties of Solutions of Sodium in Liquid Ammonia.

Abstract

An apparatus is described with which the external photo-electric effect can be measured in spectrally decomposed light on sodium ammonium solutions. From the spectral distribution of the quantum yield, we have determined the longwave boundaries and the work functions for different concentrations. Quantum yield and work function lead to the conclusion, by comparison with alkali metals, that in concentrated solutions there is a surface effect produced by free electrons. However, in dilute solutions, there is predominantly a volume effect which originates from lightly bound electrons in the interior of the solution. (Author)
