Three Dimensional Hypersonic Flow Similarity Parameters.
Abstract
The present paper presents a set of hypersonic similarity parameters applicable to the isentropic compressible flow about slender and/or thin bodies with both pitch and yaw. The fundamental hypersonic flow equations (non-linear) for compressible flow about similar finite bodies at pitch and yaw are presented showing the appearance of these parameters in the equation in non-dimensional form. Expressions for the lift, drag and yaw force and moment coefficients are derived and presented in terms of the four similarity parameters. Following this, their use for general thin bodies is outlined and illustrated for the case of cones at pitch angles (and yaw angles). Some remarks on the probable range of validity of the hypersonic similarity rules are presented when considerations of temperature, viscosity and heat transfer are taken into account. (Author)
