Overheating Test Production 'E' Series Liquid Oxygen Supply System.

Abstract

The 'E' Series engine start requirements demand that both booster engines develop thrust simultaneously and equally. It is further required that the sustainer start approximately 16 milliseconds after booster start. To fulfill the engine start requirements it is necessary that the oxidizer temperature at each booster pump inlet be on the order of -288F or lower and the temperature of the oxidizer at the sustainer pump inlet be on the order of -298F or lower. These requirements necessitated the design of a completely new propulsion plumbing system. Testing at the Point Loma Test Site using the EID 27-7017 Test Article was necessary to assure that the above conditions were satisfied by the new design. (Author)
