A Device for High-Pressure Static and Rapid One-Dimensional Compression Tests on Soil.
Abstract
An existing one-dimensional compression device for performing test on soil at pressures ranging up to 1,000 psi was modified to permit either static or rapid loading up to 5,000 psi. The equipment and its instrumentation were evaluated by a small number of tests on dense 20-30 Ottawa sand and a compacted silty sand. The test results on Ottawa sand indicate that grain crushing occurs at a lower stress level when the load is applied rapidly than under static loading conditions. The Ottawa sand tests were also compared with similar static tests performed at the University of Illinois and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The static tests on partially saturated silty sand demonstrate the impracticality of continuing a one-dimensional test after saturation is reached. (Author)
