Proposals for a Modern Serological Diagnosis of Syphilis

Abstract

This report states that the time has come to replace, for diagnostic purposes, the battery of classic reactions with a simple arrangement which yields better data: First approximation by the VDRL or Kline test; Quantitative immunofluorescence on sera which were found to be positive to flocculation, and simple qualitative IF on sera which were found to be negative to flocculation; Immobilization test -- as is currently done -- for the rare doubtful sera. For the surveillance of treated patients, the quantitative tests for these three classes of reactions are no less imperative, since the only important point is to follow the titer.
