Abstract

The further investigation of p, p'-azoxyphenetol (to be referred to, from now on, as PL II) seemed interesting in view of the characteristic and special separation ability of the liquid-crystalline phase as compared to the structurally isomeric benzene derivatives. We wanted to determine to which extent the solubility differences of meta- and para- xylene, which are so characteristic for the crystalline-liquid range, can also be applied to other compounds. The investigation was complemented by measurements performed on a series of other typical benzene derivatives. A comparison with a nonpolar standard phase (Apiezon L) seemed also desirable. Unfortunately, cholesterol benzoate exhibits no selectivity toward the benzene derivatives. Experiments to alter, i.e., to selectively shape, the solvent power of a nematic melt (PL II) under the influence of an outside magnetic field have not been successful. (Author)
