Comet Tails and Solar Corpuscular Rays.

Abstract

Long comet tails consisting of ions (CO+ etc.) frequently show accelerations of the tail elements which exceed the gravitational acceleration of the sun (0.6 cm/sec. sq. in the vicinity of the earth) by factors on the order of 10 to several thousand. Such high accelerations cannot be due to the pressure of the sun's rays on the molecules. The concept that these accelerations are produced by the corpuscular radiation of the sun is explained.
