On Cab Flaps in Non-Uniform Motion.

Abstract

The hydrodynamics and dynamics of CAB flaps in non-uniform motions are studied in detail. The first part of this report presents a simple method, based on the known results of thin-wing theory, of estimating the hydrodynamic characteristics of planing flaps in steady oscillations and transient motions. The second part of this study discusses the dynamic response phenomena involving CAB flap systems. The response problem, for a first approximation may be analyzed by the so-called lumped-parameter method. The equations governing the responses are derived from the general principles of rigid-body dynamics. Once the physical system, the hydrodynamic and externally applied forces are given, the response characteristics of the CAB flap system can be found with the aid of these equations. (Author)
