Chemically Activated Pressure Sintering of Oxides.

Abstract

Investigations into processing, manufacture, and testing of the MgO matrix have been made. Single crystal whiskers, fibers, and metallic wires have been incorporated into a magnesium oxide ceramic. The diametral strength of the composites is half the pure Magnesium oxide strength. The fracture mode is changed from intergranular with pure Magnesium oxide to a mixture of transgranular and intergranular on addition of fibers. Increasing the fiber content appears to increase the proportion of transgranular fracture.
