C2, CN and CO+ Molecular Density in Atmospheres of Bright Comets,

Abstract

Some older evaluations of the C2, CN and CO+ densities of brighter comets are re-examined. The monochromatic headforms, which the comets have in the CN and C2 bands, permit one to establish an upper limit for the f-values of the C2 and CN molecules. This limit corresponds to the newly established values. When using the latest calculated f-values for the comet tail bands a considerable increase in the CO+ density is obtained, in comparison with the older evaluations.
