Active Element Array

Abstract

This technical report presents the findings and accomplishments of a 12 month study of active Van Atta arrays. The intent of the investigation was to determine the feasibility of constructing a lightweight 16-element planar Van Atta array which would act as a retroreflector for incident microwave signals. The array was to consist of 8 pairs of spiral antennas, the antennas of each pair being interconnected via a tunnel diode amplifier. The design frequency was 4.5 GHz, with gain and bandwidth objectives of 18 dB and 200 MHz, respectively.
