The Electric Mass Filter,

Abstract

A new, all-electric mass-filter is discussed. The (time-dependent) acceleration of the ions in a high-frequency field is measured and used to screen the mass. The spatial distribution of the electric field is characterized by its potential V(x, y, z, t), which must be a pure quadratic function of the coordinates x, y, z.
