Further Investigations on the Molecular Weight of Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B

Abstract

The molecular weight of staphylococcal enterotoxin B was determined independently and by methods not previously applied to the protein; the results agree well with those obtained in two earlier studies. In order to check the previous determinations, analyses were performed in 0.05 M sodium phosphate buffer, pH 6.8, and in 0.1 ionic strength sodium Veronal buffer, pH 8.6, the isoelectric point of the protein. The sedimentation and diffusion method yielded 33,000 plus or minus 1,400 daltons in Veronal buffer and 31,800 plus or minus 1, 000 daltons in phosphate buffer. The Yphantis meniscus-depletion sedimentation equilibrium method yielded average values of 31,000 plus or minus 1,300 daltons in Veronal and 30,400 plus or minus 2,000 daltons in phosphate. Osmometry yielded an average value of 26,800 plus or minus 300 daltons in Veronal buffer.
