Foxhole Digging Aid, Interim Device.

Abstract

This report covers the development of an interim model Foxhole Digging Aid, from the feasibility study phase through the Engineering Test/Service Test phase to type classification. It includes design and test data on four separate models of a two-stage device plus one model of a one-stage device. The final model produced, EL-4, is a two-stage design consisting of a shaped explosive charge for pilot hole forming, an explosive cratering charge, two delay fuzes, and an impact-resistant plastic casing. The model weighs 1 pound and is 2.25 inches in diameter by 7.4 inches long. The model satisfactorily passed the Engineering Test/Service Test in 1965, and was type classified in 1966 as Standard-A for temperate zone use. (Author)
