Consumption of Oxygen, Elimination of Carbon Dioxide, Pulse Rate and Body Temperature in Persons at Rest in a High Environmental Temperature,
Abstract
Thirty-four healthy men were examined at room temperature, five times during a two-hour stay at 43C and 85% relative humidity, as well as twice after leaving the climatic chamber. A significant increase in oxygen consumption, in carbon dioxide elimination, a 76% increase in pulse rate, and an elevation of body temperature to 39.5C were observed. Maintenance of body temperature and pulse rate do not sufficiently account for the increase in oxygen consumption. During a five-minute stay at room temperature after leaving the chamber, consumption of oxygen and elimination of carbon dioxide returned to their original rates, but pulse rate and body temperature differed significantly from the original even after 20 minutes. A 30-minute stay in humid heat under the conditions of our experiment resulted in a disruption of thermal equilibrium. (Author)
