The Synthesis of HTPB Prepolymers by an Anionic Polymerization Method.

Abstract

This report describes the synthesis and characterization of hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) prepolymers. Important major objectives of the program were the development of preparative techniques to demonstrate the reproducibility of polymer properties and the preparation of the polymers in a variety of forms and in sufficient quantities for their evaluation in propellant systems. HTPB prepolymers were prepared by known anionic polymerization methods. Using vacuum line techniques for the preparative reactions, it was demonstrated that certain properties of the prepolymer could be reproduced. Molecular weights ranged from 3,000 to 17,000. The microstructure of the HTPB prepolymers could be varied within limits depending upon the specific type desired. (Author)
