Experimental Immunization with Live Strains of Bacterium Tularense of Low Virulence. First Report

Abstract

The subject of the investigations in this report was twofold. (1) Examination of pathogenic or apathogenic behavior of Bact. tularense in connection with the customary laboratory animals (guinea pigs, rabbits and white mice) by various modes of infection. (2) Examination of their immunizing effect in the indicated animals upon application of live cultures. The latter tests are of particular interest, especially for the practical feasibility of vaccination, since the superiority of live vaccines over killed vaccines has been established unequivocally in the case of other infectious pathogens (e.g. plague bacilli by Strong).
